Although the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are behind us, in recent weeks a rather fascinating fashion angle has emerged, which not only warmed the heart, but made us remember how important fashion is as a tool in its power to unite and fight, especially in the distant and divisive corona era.

As mentioned, the sports tournament was held this year in Japan, which was held towards it for four years, when it was announced as the host country.

One of the exciting projects it has launched ahead of the Olympics is the preparation and creation from scratch of 207 kimonos - the traditional Japanese attire - for each of the heads of the countries' sports delegations.

One of them, of course, was also dedicated to the Israeli delegation.

But first of all, what is a kimono?

It is an elegant and ceremonial robe in Japanese culture, used primarily by the female sex, but sometimes seen by men and children as well.

In the past it was known as the daily attire of emperors, samurai, wealthy women and geishas, and today it is worn mainly at festive events and ceremonies as well as at family parties.

The traditional kimono consists of layers of silk or satin rolls in different colors and decorations, but in modern times, as the textile industry developed, kimonos were made of cotton, polyester and other synthetic fabrics, making them more accessible and cheaper.

The craft of preparing the kimonos for the Olympics was entrusted to Japanese artists and took about four years (!), And if that is not a crazy enough figure, then the cost of creating each kimono was $ 20,000.

The same artists devised a unique pattern for each kimono, taking into account the symbols, values, representation, aesthetics and beliefs of each and every country.

The Israeli kimono was designed by Prof. Akiyama Akira of Tokyo University, who specializes in ancient arts.

To this end, he met with Ruthi Kahanov, the Ambassador of Japan to Israel, and due to being an avid bird lover, advised him to choose the national bird of the State of Israel, the Dokifat, and incorporate the word "peace" on the canvas, saying that birds are borderless, as well as politics.

The kimono - which, like that of the other countries, was photographed spread out on a black Japanese hanger with gold ornaments - made of blue silk, on which birds of prey are printed in flight, as well as olive leaf branches, cyclamen, daffodils and pansies and dates - are also significant representatives of Israeli nature. .

Prof. Yossi Leshem, a member of the Society for the Protection of Nature, who, together with Dan Alon, director of the Israeli Birding Center at the Society for the Protection of Nature, initiated the project to select Israel's national bird in 2008. It conveys a message of brotherhood and peace, and I was very moved that I was exposed to it. "

Unfortunately, due to the limitations of the corona, the kimonos were not physically distributed to the delegations, but it was decided to present them to the general public at a special exhibition to be held in Osaka in four years.

Pierre?

We would wear.
