(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 21 - The large container ship EverGiven, which ran aground in the Suez Canal last March causing it to be blocked for six days, has returned to retrace the waterway today, escorted by two tugs and a group of experienced pilots provided by the Suez Authority (Sca).
The ship, operated by Taiwan's Evergreen company, traveled the Canal from Great Britain to China. Another 36 ships sailed along it from the south.
The Ever Given, about 400 meters long, insured in Japan, after blocking freight traffic for almost a week, was freed from aground but remained in Egypt until last July 7, 106 days after it ran aground. He arrived at the port of Rotterdam on 29 July.
The terms of the compensation agreement were not known, but in the beginning Egypt asked for the sum of 900 million dollars, which was then reduced to 550 million. A SCA employee died in the dewatering operations.
In May, the Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, announced a two-year plan to widen and deepen the Suez Canal to avoid the repetition of incidents such as that of the Ever Given. (HANDLE).
