He was considered one of the most precise and critical observers of East-West politics.
From the 1960s, Jürgen Engert observed German-German relations as a newspaper and radio journalist from Berlin.
Since he was denied a place at university in the GDR, he went first to Munich and later to West Berlin before the Wall was built.
Before starting his television career, Engert made a name for himself as editor-in-chief of the West Berlin tabloid »Der Abend«, which appeared until the 1980s.
From 1987 to 1998 he was editor-in-chief of the broadcaster Free Berlin and from 1998 until his retirement in 2001 he was founding director of the ARD capital studio in Berlin.
From 1984 to 1998 Engert moderated the political magazine »Kontraste« on ARD.
Among other things, he wrote the screenplay for the feature film "Once on Ku'damm and back" and the book "Mein Gott Berlin".
As the broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg announced, Jürgen Engert died on Sunday at the age of 85.
