Foreign object contamination is one of the most common causes of a recall in the food industry.

Another reason is contamination with bacteria or viruses.

Occasionally, products can also be contaminated with chemical or biological residues.

This is currently the case across Europe for foods that contain locust bean gum.

This substance, labeled E410, is often used as a thickener for ice cream, baked goods or meat products.

Large amounts of locust bean gum are contaminated with ethylene oxide, which is considered to be carcinogenic.
