The tourist congestion has caused various cities around the world to impose a tourism tax in recent years to regulate the entry of foreign visitors, and now Venice has also announced its intention to charge an entrance fee starting next summer.
The Italian city is considered one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world and the tourism levy was planned there two years ago to take effect in 2020 and allow control of the flow of tourists that has only grown over the years.
But the corona crisis has caused a postponement and now, in light of the gradual recovery, a decision has been made to activate the tourism tax starting in the summer of 2022, in the hope that it will curb mass arrivals and improve the quality of life of local residents.

According to the La Stampa newspaper, visitors will be asked to book the visit in advance and quotas will be determined by the number of entrants.
Admission to Venice is expected to cost between 3 and 10 euros, depending on the season and the expected amount of tourists that day.
In addition, on the access roads to the bustling historic center of the city, revolving entrance barriers will be set up to regulate the amounts of visitors.
Local residents, their family members and tourists who have booked a hotel in Venice will be exempt from paying the entrance fee.
Last month Italy barred the arrival of cruise ships to the lagoon in Venice to prevent over-tourism, and now this is another preventative measure, but not everyone agrees with the moves.
City Councilman Marco Gasprinti proposed restricting access to particularly densely populated areas, such as St. Mark's Square, and warned: "This tax will make Venice another amusement park."
