"You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, stop
.
"
The message was posted on the official Twitter of the FDA (the health agency of the United States) to spread a statement in which the entity called
not to use ivermectin
to treat or prevent the coronavirus.
In the document, the entity states that "the use of any treatment for COVID-19 that is not approved or authorized by the FDA, unless it is part of a clinical trial,
can be very dangerous and cause serious harm
.
"
In addition, he details that he received "multiple reports from patients who
have required medical assistance and have been hospitalized
after self-medicating with ivermectin intended for horses."
Ivermectin is a
broad spectrum
antiparasitic agent
in human and veterinary medicine.
In in vitro tests it showed its
potential as an inhibitor of the SARS-CoV-2 virus
.
It became important when some clinical investigations showed to provide a significant reduction in the risk of contagion and in the mortality of the positives.
You are not a horse.
You are not a cow.
Seriously, y'all.
Stop it.

In recent times a
strong controversy has arisen
over its use.
The WHO and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) had already advised against its use.
At the local level, the Argentine Society of Infectious Diseases (SADI) did the same, while the ANMAT did not endorse its use.
However, several provinces such as Misiones, Salta, Jujuy, Corrientes, Tucumán and La Pampa, added it as an official policy for prophylaxis in health personnel and as a treatment for infected patients.
Meanwhile, a study carried out by Argentine doctors Héctor Carvallo and Roberto Hirsch, concluded that the drug is an effective adjuvant method for personal protective equipment in the prophylaxis of SARS-CoV-2 in health personnel and their contacts.
Therefore, they recommend implementing it in vulnerable population groups: geriatric and psychiatric institutes, orphanages and prisons, among others.
What the FDA said
Beyond the curious posting on networks, the document released by the FDA provides a score of the information that is known about the use of ivermectin.
The FDA has not approved the use of ivermectin to treat or prevent COVID-19 in humans.
Ivermectin tablets are approved in very specific dosages for some parasitic worms, and there are topical (on the skin) formulations for lice and skin conditions like rosacea.
Ivermectin is not an antiviral (a medicine to treat viruses).
Taking large doses of this medicine is dangerous and can cause serious harm.
If you have a prescription for ivermectin for approved use, obtain it from a legitimate source and take it exactly as prescribed.
Never use drugs intended for animals in humans.
Ivermectin preparations for animals are very different from those approved for humans.
Meanwhile, the health agency warned that "even ivermectin levels for approved uses can interact with other medications, such as anticoagulants."
He adds: "You can also overdose on ivermectin, which can lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypotension (low blood pressure), allergic reactions (itching and hives), dizziness, ataxia (balance problems), seizures, coma and including death."
On the other hand, he clarified that ivermectin products for animals are different from ivermectin products for people, and that those made for animals are usually "very concentrated."
These high doses "can be very toxic to humans."
