You have decided to build a wooden deck, you have made some inquiries, you have the methodology.

Very well.

Proper fixation is the key to the stability and durability of a patio.

It is therefore important to choose the right screws for the foundation.

  • How to use special screws for a terrace?

Choosing the right deck foundation screws is important for a strong and durable construction.

The choice of screws depends on the location of your patio, as you won't be using the same type of screws for a patio in your backyard or by a swimming pool.

A2 (freshwater) or A4 (saltwater) stainless steel screws are required to resist weathering and corrosion.

How to calculate the number of screws per blade?

It is important to know the quantity of screws to buy to build your wooden deck.

    The calculation is simple:

    • Start by calculating the linear meter of your terrace, which corresponds to all the boards placed side by side on one meter

    • Then divide 1 meter by the width of the blade.

Example if your blade is 140 mm wide, this gives 1 / 0.14 = approximately 7 ML

    • Knowing that it takes 5 screws per linear meter, that makes 7 x 5 = 35 screws / m2

If you are not sure, give yourself some leeway and take a few more screws.

Attention, before buying your terrace screws, do not forget to take into account the length of the terrace boards.

The shorter they are, the more joints there are at the joists.

It is therefore necessary to provide twice as many screws at this level.

What size screw should I use?

For best results, the screw should measure 2.5 times the thickness of the wooden blade:

    • blades less than 22 mm = 50 mm screw

    • 22 to 27 mm blades = 60 mm screw

    • blades over 27 mm = 70 mm screw

You have several sizes of terrace screws available including the 5 x 80 mm screws which are to be reserved for joists.

Namely, the distance between the tip of the screw and the lower part of the blade holder should be at least 10 millimeters.

This information is very important, because if the fixing does not meet these conditions, you may have assembly defects which are sources of deterioration of the terrace: rust may appear, break the screw and the wood may discolour. and burst in places.

How to proceed to build your terrace?

It is recommended to pre-drill the boards and joists in order to have an impeccable finish and a simpler and more precise screwing. Choose a thinner forest to prevent the wood from splitting. The holes for the terrace screws correspond to the location of the joists, approximately every 40 cm. Screw 1 or 2 centimeters from the ends of the boards in width. Do not hesitate to make pencil marks so that the screws are properly aligned. When screwing in, if you find it a bit hard, rub the thread with paraffin. The screw head must be flush with the surface of the blade, which is more aesthetic. A little reminder: when you put your planks, don't forget the expansion game. Indeed, temperature variations are likely to cause changes in the dimensions of your boards, especially in width. They can expand when heated or contract when cold.
