The storage space of the PlayStation 5 can be expanded with special SSDs.
We explain here how to install them.
Not all PS5 users can use SSDs yet.
As every PlayStation 5 owner can confirm, the usable memory of the console is only sufficient for a small number of games. Since the operating system occupies part of the storage space, about 667 gigabytes are left for your own installations in the end. And since the file sizes of current next-gen titles now exceed 100 gigabytes (for example "Call of Duty: Vanguard" * with an unbelievable 175 gigabytes!), There is quickly no more space for further games. Additional solid state drives (SSDs) for the PS5 * can help, but at the moment
only users of the beta system software
can use them. Soon, however, Sony should unlock the SSDs for all users. How to install the memory expansion is explained in the following section.
We have
listed
which SSDs are compatible with the PS5
in a separate article *.
PS5 SSD: How to install the memory extension
If
you have
already obtained
an
SSD for the PS5, please
follow the steps
below to
install it.
Step 1: Remove the housing plate
First, make sure that the console is
not plugged
in.
In the first step, lay the PS5 on its side - the drive side must face up.
For users of the digital edition, this is the right side.
Although it doesn't look like there's a way to remove the lower part of the PS5, it's actually pretty easy: grab the white case panel at the bottom and top right by the edge.
With your right hand, carefully lift the edge of the cover, then pull down with your left hand.
The plate should separate from the main body of the console, revealing the main body of the system.
Right next to the PS5's fan is
a narrow metal cover, which is attached with a single screw
and on which the PlayStation symbols are engraved.
You can remove this screw with a standard Phillips screwdriver.
The SSD is installed here.
Step 2: install SSD
The slot provided for the SSD already has holes to which compatible SSDs can be screwed.
There is already a
screw and spacer
on the 110 mm hole
.
Remove this.
Select the hole that fits the size of your SSD.
Now place the spacer there again.
Then put the SSD on it.
Press it down a little and
it should click into place
.
Make sure the contacts are aligned correctly.
Then screw the SSD tight.
Then reattach the metal cover and place the housing plate on the console.
Step 3: Install SSD on PS5 system
Note:
As already mentioned, only users of the beta system software can currently install and use the SSDs.
When you turn on your PS5 for the first time after installing the SSD, a corresponding screen will appear.
Here you need to
select the
“Format M.2 SSD”
option
to ensure that the console can use it as game storage.
If you do not select this option at this stage, the PS5 will boot normally and you will not be able to use additional storage space.
Formatting takes a moment.
After that, you will be told how fast your SSD can read data.
You can then use the additional storage space.
To use the SSD as the primary storage location, go to "
Settings
" and "
Storage
".
The storage expansion is listed here as "M.2 SSD storage" next to the console storage.
Under "Installation location" you can determine which games are to be installed on which storage medium.
You can also use this menu to move your already installed games.
