Have you ever taken off your shoes during a long flight?
Well, it turns out to be a very bad idea - and not just because of the angry looks you get from the other passengers on the plane.
Tonya Kona, an experienced flight attendant, explained why it can be even dangerous to expose your fingers while flying.
"Apart from the fact that you will stink the seat in front of you when you put your feet on it, taking off shoes can be something very unsafe in an emergency," she wrote, "in an emergency, things that fall on the floor and other unwanted objects will block your way to a protected place. Writer Christine Negroni has written an entire book on plane crashes, where she also talked about taking off her shoes on flights.
She believes airlines should oblige their passengers to wear shoes throughout the flight and not settle for flip-flops or sandals.
If the danger to your life does not sound threatening enough to prevent you from walking barefoot, perhaps knowing what exactly you are stepping on will do the job.
Stewardesses have warned this in the past: "Do not walk around barefoot. There is urine and feces everywhere. It feels like looking at an accident. Obviously the plane is cleaned after landing but not during. I cringe whenever I want a passenger going to the bathroom barefoot or with socks. "Sometimes the plane returns to the air in 20 minutes, so there is not too much time to clean the toilets between flights, apart from a quick rag transfer."
