Good sleep lets us wake up refreshed and full of energy.

A new survey shows in which cities people sleep particularly well.

Healthy sleep strengthens our immune system, promotes concentration and is also important for maintaining healthy eyesight.

A new study by the optical online retailer Lenstore examined the cities in the world where you can sleep best.

Factors such as the consumption of sleeping pills, humidity, average temperature, depression rate, light pollution and air quality were included in the survey.

Which cities worldwide offer the best opportunities for recreation?

According to the Lenstore analysis, the following are

five places:

  • Canberra, Australia:

The Australian capital does best of all cities because it has the lowest nighttime light and noise pollution with a value of 80.82 out of 100.

  • Vienna, Austria:

Vienna is in the top 10 cities due to its low noise levels and is a great place to relax, even if the number of searches for sleeping pills is in the top half of the ranking.

  • Luxembourg City, Luxembourg:

Only 7.6 percent of the population in Luxembourg work more than 48 hours a week, and the city also has the sixth best air quality of all cities surveyed.

  • Jerusalem, Israel:

Jerusalem has the lowest humidity and an ideal climate for sleeping, which comes closest to the optimal temperature of 18.3 degrees with 19.2 degrees Celsius.

  • Tokyo, Japan:

Japan has the lowest number of people needing medication in an international comparison and has one of the lowest search volumes for sleeping pills with 18 searches per 100,000 inhabitants.

Poor air quality, popular sleeping pills: sleep suffers in these cities

Cities that

score poorly

include the following:

  • Washington, USA:

More people search for "sleeping pills" in Washington than in any other city surveyed (224 Google searches per 100,000 population).

  • Santiago, Chile:

The air quality in Santiago is the worst in the rating with a value of only 17.72 out of 100.

  • Bogotá, Colombia:

27.80 percent of Bogotá's population work more than 48 hours per week, only surpassed by Mexico City in this analysis.

Berlin is in the good midfield of the evaluation:

According to the Lenstore analysis, only 5.9 percent of residents work more than 48 hours per week, which usually has a positive effect on sleep.

The depression rate is also in the middle, 5.2 percent of Berliners suffer from depression - in Canberra it is 5.9 percent in comparison.

Overall, Berlin achieved a rating of 6.4 in the evaluation.

The winner, Canberra, scores 7.3.
