(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 29 - 'We cannot abandon the children of Afghanistan in times of need': this is the appeal of the regional director of UNICEF George Laryea-Adjei.

The humanitarian organization estimates that 300,000 children are forced to leave their homes, in some cases while they were asleep, following the arrival of the Taliban and the rush to leave the country. One million children under 5 will suffer from severe, life-threatening malnutrition. Over 4 million children, including 2.2 million girls, are out of school. "They are struggling with anxieties and fears: too many have witnessed scenes that no child should ever see."

   (HANDLE).
