France and the United Kingdom will ask the United Nations Security Council on Monday to create a "safe zone" in Kabul to allow the continuation of humanitarian operations on the spot and to protect people who try to leave Afghanistan after 31 August.
This was stated by French President Emmanuel Macron to the Journal du Dimanche.
Ahead of the meeting at the UN headquarters, London and Paris are preparing a "draft resolution" which "aims to define, under the control of the UN, a safe zone in Kabul", announced Macron.
Macron also said that "discussions have been initiated with the Taliban" to "protect and repatriate Afghans at risk beyond August 31". France is counting on the help of Qatar which, thanks to its good relations with the Taliban, "has the possibility of organizing air transport operations or reopening some airlines", Macron said. In the Journal du Dimanche, the French president said he envisions "targeted evacuations that will not be carried out through the military airport of Kabul". "We will see - added Macron - if this can be done through the civilian airport of the Afghan capital or through neighboring countries".
