The panda bear brothers Pit and Paule from the Berlin Zoo turned two years old on Tuesday.
And what should a panda be happy about on its birthday if not a bamboo cake?
The birthday surprise, refined with apples and sweet potatoes, was only enjoyed by Paule and Mama Meng Meng. The hustle and bustle seemed to be too much for Pit: he climbed a tree and watched the small celebration from above. According to zoo spokeswoman Katharina Sperling, Paule is the cheekier of the two anyway. Paule also cracked the "2" made of ice that came with the cake.
When they were born, the panda twins Pit and Paule weighed just as much as a bar of chocolate, now they weigh around 65 kilos each.
The first panda birth in a German zoo on August 31, 2019 was a sensation.
Pandas are not only loners, but also downright sex grouch.
There is only a chance of newcomers on around three days a year.
It had never worked in Berlin before, now four giant pandas live here - the only ones in Germany.
The bear brothers were officially given the Chinese names Meng Yuan and Meng Xiang.
That means fulfilled dream and longed-for dream.
But the zookeepers quickly christened the two Pit and Paule.
The bear brothers only have contact with their mother Meng Meng.
Papa Jiao Qing lives in a separate enclosure.
It is also common in the wild that only the mothers are responsible for raising the young, said Sperling.
Pit and Paule have their most active time in the morning.
“Otherwise they spend the day sleeping, eating and playing either outside in the outdoor area or inside in the cool indoor area,” says Sperling.
