Hundreds of electric scooters have been damaged by strangers with grease in the Russian capital Moscow, making them temporarily unfit to drive. Most of the handles and displays of the scooters were smeared on Tuesday, the lender Whoosh told the newspaper »RBK«. More than 800 cases were known by the afternoon. The background was initially unclear. The police first looked for at least three strangers. After cleaning, many devices were put back on the road.

Electric scooters are mostly extremely popular with younger people in Russia, but are increasingly causing problems on sidewalks and in parks because of their sometimes high speed. According to the Interior Ministry, more than 180 accidents involving these driving devices were reported to the police across the country in the first half of the year alone. Five people died and 188 were injured. Some cities like St. Petersburg or Novosibirsk in Siberia have therefore imposed a speed limit.

As the daily newspaper »Kommersant« reported, around ten million people in Russia have now registered with rental companies - but there are nowhere near as many electric scooters.

Especially since the beginning of the corona pandemic, demand has grown because such a trip in full buses or subways can be bypassed, it said.

Experts warn that in future more and more unused batteries of e-scooters could be illegally disposed of in nature.
