For an exhibition on the famous archaeological monument Stonehenge, a detailed replica of the huge prehistoric stone circle was set up in Herne.

From September 23, visitors to the local archeology museum of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) will not only experience the huge monument for a year, but also immerse themselves in its history.

Stonehenge is unique in its form and remains a mystery to this day, says LWL chief archaeologist Michael Rind.

Even if science now knows many technical facts about the monument in England, the reasons why it was built are ultimately still not really clear.

Hardly any other archaeological site in the world has been as well researched as Stonehenge.

It is clear that the stone circle did not stand alone in the landscape.

The whole region was evidently of outstanding importance for the people of the Stone and Bronze Ages.

Over centuries they came there and erected huge monuments - some are even older and larger than Stonehenge.

It was only about a year ago that researchers discovered a previously unknown monument.

What the systems were used for in detail is unclear.

It is noticeable, however, that several of the monuments are geared towards cosmological features such as the summer and winter solstices.
