(ANSA) - NEW YORK, 02 SEPT - Efforts are growing to get the players of the youth women's football team out of Afghanistan together with their families. Girls move from place to place without warning in a desperate attempt to escape the Taliban, and efforts to evacuate them came to a halt with the bombing at Kabul airport last week. "They're just amazing girls who should be playing in the backyard with their friends, and they're in a bad situation just because they play football," said Robert McCreary, former congress chief of staff and White House official under President George W. Bush, who worked with special forces in Afghanistan: "We must do everything possible to protect them and to bring them into a safe situation. "

Most of the members of the Afghan women's team, formed in 2007, were evacuated to Australia last week. Girls - aged 14 to 16 - and their families could also be targeted by the Taliban, not only because women are forbidden to play sports, but because they were active members of their communities, as Farkhunda Muhtaj, captain of the women's national team of Afghanistan, which lives in Canada. Complicating the rescue effort is the size of the group: a total of 133 people, including 26 youth team players, and many do not have passports or other documentation needed to board flights from Kabul.
