The Sugar tax will cost the market 180 million euros in turnover in 2022, compared to 2019, 250 million supplies and over 5,000 jobs: this is the forecast by the Nomisma study "The soft drinks sector in Italy in the post-covid era" presented today at the Cibus in Parma during the conference "The non-alcoholic drinks supply chain, risks and opportunities", organized by Asssobibe, the Confindustria association representing non-alcoholic beverage companies, and Confagricoltura.

The economic analysis, commissioned by Assobibe to Nomisma and elaborated on the entry into force of the Sugar Tax scheduled for next January 1, 2022, provides in particular that the introduction of the tax will result in an increase in taxation by 28% and a penalty consumption with negative repercussions on every link in the supply chain and on a sector "already severely weakened by the pandemic".

"The Nomisma study demonstrates - comments Giangiacomo Pierini, president of Assobibe - the devastating, economic and social effects of the introduction of a tax worth 10 euros / hectolitre in an already uncertain moment. Instead - he adds - facilitating growth and employment , with the introduction of the Sugar Tax in 2022 there will be a 16% contraction of the volume market, -180 million euros in turnover compared to 2019 and -344 million euros if we consider the loss of turnover in 2023 compared to to 2019 ".

"The Sugar Tax - says the president of Confagricoltura Massimiliano Giansanti - also risks giving the coup de grace to the national sugar sector, already heavily damaged by the liberalization of quotas, which has contributed to the decimation of the number of companies and sugar factories. It would be rather appropriate. identify measures that are adequate and effectively functional to the objective of guaranteeing the protection of health and well-being ".
