The "
Napoleon of the cinema
" always has the madness of grandeur.
Francis Ford Coppola, already author of monumental works such as the
Godfather
trilogy
or
Apocalypse Now
, says he is ready to invest more than one hundred million dollars from his pocket to make the film of his dreams:
Megalopolis
.
Between science fiction and peplum
The director has been working on it for twenty years. But the attacks of September 11 put a stop to this project centered on the city of New York.
Megalopolis
stages an architect, who dreams of creating a utopian New York, but who has to face the mayor of the city, hostile to his project. A project between science fiction and peplum, since it would be partly based on the Conjuration of Catiline, the rebellious senator who opposed Cicero, in ancient Rome.
In the spring of 2019, Coppola tackles
Megalopolis
again
, but no studio follows him in his cinematic “megalomania”.
Always animated by an inextinguishable sacred fire, the filmmaker, at 82, has not abdicated: “
I am still the same as twenty or forty years ago.
I always want to make a dream movie, even if I have to stake my own money, I am able to put out a hundred million dollars if I have to.
I don't want it, but if I have to I will,
”he recently told Deadline.
To make his project a reality, the director has already broken his piggy bank, selling part of his Californian vineyard to finance the beginnings of the film.
"
A film that gives hope to young people
"
Unlike his other large-scale accomplishments rooted in the near or present past - the Mafia and the assimilation of Italians into American culture for
The Godfather
, the Vietnam War for
Apocalypse Now
- Francis Ford Coppola did not scared to look to the future: “
Everyone wants to make the next
Marvel
, but nobody wants to make a film that really gives young people hope. We are ready to come together and solve any problems that come our way. That's what I believe and that will be the real theme of the film.
"
The director hopes to be able to start shooting his feature film in the fall of 2022. For what will perhaps be his ultimate work, he wants to surround himself with the greatest. Lovers of his gesture will be happy to know that Coppola has contacted the legendary Sonny Corleone, the unforgettable James Caan from The
Godfather
. And for good measure, he's also approached the crème de la crème of Hollywood, Forest Whitaker, Oscar Isaac, Cate Blanchett, Jon Voight, Zendaya, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jessica Lange.
