Those who have already visited

Cerro Castor

in Ushuaia witnessed its unique natural conditions.

Its geographical location, on the southern slope of the mountain, allows the quality of the snow to be optimal.

In turn, they have been able to enjoy its facilities and learn about the variety of services.

Cerro Castor permanently invests in technology offering a differential experience to those who choose it: a

system of chairlifts and teleskies

of the most modern in the country (which also ensure the fluidity of circulation so that long lines are not generated), an exclusive magic carpets sector for beginners, and the incorporation of digital systems for all its services.

In addition, since 2004 it has a network of

artificial snow cannons

(a total of 28 covering more than 30% of the surface with artificial snow) that guarantees (if necessary) good conditions for skiing throughout the season. .

Snow cannons

There are two types of snow cannons or snowguns: the so-called lances and the turbine cannons.

"The lances are long pipes and the turbine cannons are like fans. The difference is the manufacturing capacity that each one has. The turbine, with greater volume, adapts better to the wind. The lances make less snow and although they are more economic, when there is wind they do not work well ”, says

Gastón Begue

, president and chief operating officer of Cerro Castor.

In addition, the starting temperature has to be lower than in turbine guns.

That is to say: it has to be colder for them to start.

El Cerro has cannons to make snow.

Manufacturing time is generally at night, when the lowest temperatures are recorded.

“The principle of making snow is to inject the smallest possible water particles into the air, to facilitate their transformation into a snow particle in cold temperatures.

It is like watering the track at a certain pressure, breaking the water particles into the smallest possible parts, it turns into snow and then, when it melts, it becomes water again and continues its cycle ”, explains Begué.

Green infrastructure

The infrastructure installed in Cerro Castor

ensures the supply of water and all electrical connections for the system to function.

The water pressure is important, which can be by gravity (if the water reservoir is high) or by pumping if the water is below.

"Cerro Castor uses the water from the river at the base, and it is important to note that all that snow naturally returns to the river when it melts, without any type of chemical additives," Gastón details.

In 2018, in the eastern area of the mountain, the land was worked generating an artificial lake to supply this network of artificial snow in the eastern area.

Online sale and premium lockers

Cerro Castor today offers the possibility of obtaining passes, renting equipment, and booking ski or snowboard lessons, all digitally, through its website www.cerrocastor.com.

This allows greater speed when reaching the mountain, avoiding delays and facilitating access to it.

The chairlifts, one of the attractions.

Another benefit is the rental of automatic lockers: a sector of 150 state-of-the-art premium lockers, with an automatic drying system, capacity for 2 ski and / or snowboard equipment, boots and helmets, which open directly with the pass.

They are located in Rental Alpino and it is another of the differentials valued by those who visit the southernmost ski center.

With these differentials and the month of September ahead, Cerro Castor works to continue receiving tourists in the longest season and with the highest quantity and quality of snow.
