(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, SEPTEMBER 04 - The train whistled.

From the Estação do Oriente in Lisbon to the Gare de l'Est in Paris, passing through over 100 cities across Europe. A 36-day journey over 20,000 km across 26 states and 33 border crossings. And more exhibitions and events to animate the ConnectingEurope Express, the special train that left last Thursday from the Portuguese capital that will arrive in Italy tomorrow at 9.20pm at the Turin Porta Nuova station. From there he will move to Milan and Rome and then go up towards Verona and Bolzano, first unraveling along the Austrian mountains.

The initiative, promoted by the EU Commission, takes place as part of the European Year of Railways, wanted by Brussels to raise public awareness of the use of sustainable means of transport. The decarbonisation of the entire sector, which alone is responsible for a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions, is crucial for achieving the objectives of the Green Deal: cutting emissions by 2030 by 55% compared to 1990 levels and climate neutrality by 2050.

Hence the challenge European Union on railways, the least polluting of the means of transport. (HANDLE).
