Covid-19: New Caledonia is reconfigured for two weeks

2021-09-06T10:55:01.750Z

Three indigenous cases of Covid-19 have been discovered, raising fears that “dozens of people” are now infected.

New Caledonia is not done with health restrictions.

The President of the Government, Louis Mapou, has just announced this Monday that the territory will enter a new strict and generalized confinement from this Tuesday noon, for a period of fifteen days, reports La 1ère.

The discovery of three indigenous cases of Covid-19 motivated this decision.

Two of them, unvaccinated, were hospitalized because of their symptoms - one has even been in intensive care since Monday.

The third, vaccinated, is asymptomatic, but he was still admitted to the Covid-19 unit of the Médipôle de Nouméa, reports the local channel.

Three positive cases of Covid-19, unrelated to each other, were detected Monday, September 6 in the population.

New Caledonia will enter strict confinement on Tuesday, September 7 at noon for 15 days.

Investigations have been launched to identify contact cases and try to trace the chain of transmission.

“These people have no connection to each other and have not traveled recently.

This means that the virus has started to circulate in New Caledonia ”, warned Louis Mapou, who fears that“ several dozen people are now infected ”.

Schools and nurseries closed

From this Tuesday, residents will have to travel with a certificate and only for trips between home and work, for medical reasons or a compelling professional reason.

It is possible to take the air, but only in a restricted area.

Teleworking should be privileged, ask the authorities.

Schools and universities are closed from Monday evening but nurseries can operate until Tuesday noon.

Reception arrangements will be put in place for priority personnel.

Restaurants, bars and theaters will also close their doors.

This is the third time that New Caledonia is confined, after a first time at the end of March 2020 and a second time in March 2021. Last Friday, the congress adopted the vaccination obligation for all adults, facing the fear of contagiousness of the Delta variant, while 30% of the eligible population is vaccinated.
