Dead vaccines against Corona: Safer than Biontech & Astrazeneca? When “the new ones” will be used in Germany

A number of dead corona vaccines are currently being tested in clinical studies around the world.

Read here how they work in the body and when they could be launched.

Vector and mRNA vaccines are already approved in Germany. These include the preparations from

Biontech and Moderna (mRNA technology)

and the vaccines from Johnson & Johnson and Astrazeneca (vector vaccines). With mRNA corona vaccines, the blueprint for the corona-specific spike protein is injected *, which is located on the surface of the virus. The body is able to form antibodies against the spike protein and build up self-protection against Covid-19.

Vector vaccines,

on the other hand, consist of viruses (components) that are harmless to humans, the so-called vectors. If these are administered in the form of a vaccination, an immune reaction and thus the development of vaccination protection is usually achieved.

Inactivated vaccines (also called inactivated vaccines) against the coronavirus are currently still in development. Only when the registration studies are successful can they come onto the market. According to the Federal Center for Health Education, dead vaccines only contain killed pathogens that can no longer multiply, or only components of the pathogen.

These are recognized by the body as foreign and stimulate the body's own defense system to form antibodies without the disease breaking out, it goes on to say

. The inactivated vaccine technology has already been tried and tested; it is used against diphtheria, hepatitis B, polio, whooping cough and tetanus. The flu vaccination is also a dead vaccine, like the

Corona inactivated vaccines: Seven preparations in clinical phase III

Worldwide, several dead corona vaccines are already in the final clinical phase III.

In this phase, a vaccine candidate is tested on several thousand to tens of thousands of volunteers.

The study leaders are researching whether the vaccine protects against infection and what possible side effects occur.

Only when phase III has been successfully completed can manufacturers submit an application for approval to the European Medicines Agency (EMA)

.

According to research-based pharmaceutical companies, the following dead corona vaccines are at the end of the development phase - and could therefore soon be approved:

  • NVX-CoV2373 from Novavax

  • SP0253 from Sanofi / GSK

  • tbd of the Beijing Institute of Biological Products / Sinopharm

  • FINLAY-FR-2 anti SARS-CoV-2 of the Instituto Finlay de Vacunas (Cuba)

  • EpiVacCorona of the Vector Virology Institute (Russia)

  • CoVLP from Medicago (Canada) / GSK

  • recombinant SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (Sf9 cell) of the West China Hospital, Sichuan University

Survey on the subject of corona vaccination

Dead vaccine approval application expected in the third quarter of 2021

According to the researching pharmaceutical companies, the first complete application for approval of a dead corona vaccine in the EU is expected in the third quarter of 2021

. Whether the vaccine category of inactivated vaccines is more effective than the previously approved preparations will only be shown when the studies are completed and the vaccines are widely used. The EMA will decide whether and how safe they are as part of the manufacturer's application for approval. Only when the preparations are classified as safe and effective can they - like the products from Biontech, Moderna, Astrazeneca and Johnson & Johnson - be approved in Germany.

Everyone has to make the vaccination decision for themselves.

But there are many voices from medicine and research who recommend the fastest possible vaccination appointment.

Virus expert Professor Dr.

Dr.

Franz-Xaver Reichl from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich on the corona vaccination: "

We can only counter the pandemic through vaccination

", so his appeal to the citizens.

There is no other way to protect the health of all people.

Not only does the vaccination reduce the risk of serious disease progression.

The vaccination also drastically reduces your own risk of infection *.
