The United Nations fear that children who have fled will attend secondary schools even less than before because of the consequences of the corona pandemic.
According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, the school enrollment rate of refugees in secondary schools in 40 countries was only 34 percent in 2019/2020.
"The recent advances in the schooling of refugee children and young people are now threatened," said UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi at the presentation of a global school report.
Failure to attend school increases the risk of child labor and other forms of exploitation.
The UN refugee agency called on the states to ensure the right of refugees to access secondary education.
Countries that are accepting large numbers of displaced people needed capacity building support - including more schools, appropriate learning materials and teacher training in specific subjects, the report said.
According to the information, 68 percent of the refugees attended a primary school.
According to the UN, every twentieth person has opted for a higher education.
That is a plus compared to the previous year, but the desired goal is difficult to achieve.
According to the UNHCR, 15 percent of refugees should receive an education that leads to a degree by 2030.
