This is a first in the world since the start of vaccination against Covid-19: in Cuba, children over two years of age have started to be vaccinated in the province of Cienfuegos.

Faced with an increase in cases which is rocking its health system, the country is the first to take the plunge by extending the vaccine to the youngest.

If other countries like China, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela have announced their intention to vaccinate the little ones, Cuba is the first to launch such a campaign.

Because for the moment, in the rest of the world, vaccination remains only accessible to over 12 years.

This massive immunization campaign began on Friday on the Caribbean island, with the two Cuban vaccines Abdala and Soberana 2, designed by scientists in the country. Not recognized by the WHO, these vaccines are based on a recombinant protein, the same technique on which the American Novavax and the French Sanofi are working. Objective of the Cuban government: to vaccinate all schoolchildren in the country to finally be able to reopen the country's schools. Schools have been closed since March 2020 and only reopened briefly, for a few weeks, at the end of the year, before closing again in January.

For over a year and a half, schoolchildren and students have been forced to follow lessons through state television. Once the campaign is over, the little Cubans will be able to return to the school benches, in stages, between October and November.
