After having to work from home, many employees have to go back to the office.

But what do dog owners do with their four-legged friends?

In the Corona crisis, many people in Germany bought a dog.

Anyone who couldn't work during lockdown times or who worked from home had a lot of time for a four-legged friend.

But now many employees have

to go back to the office

or another workplace.

Now what happens to the dog when nobody can take care of him?

Can the dog go to the office?

The company management has to decide

whether the dog is allowed into the office

. Employees should therefore try to convince the boss and the human resources department to use an office dog. “It is always worth asking and talking to your superiors about whether you can bring your dog with you,” says Sarah Ross from the animal welfare organization “Four Paws” in a report by the German Press Agency (dpa). "A dog at work has a stress-reducing effect and can have a positive effect on the entire working atmosphere," says the expert.

However, there are often

reasons against an office dog

, for example if other employees are afraid of their four-legged

friends

or if they have animal hair allergies.

Regulations that specify which areas dogs are allowed to go into - and where they are not allowed to go - may also help here.

Can I leave my dog at home alone?

If the supervisor decides against dogs at work, pet owners can also test whether they can leave their dog alone in the apartment during the day. However, a full working day would be too long. The animal welfare organization Vier Pfoten recommends

not leaving

a dog

alone for more than four hours

. Other experts consider up to six hours to be feasible. Anything else would be too long for the animal psyche - and the dog has to do its business too.

However, dogs should be gradually introduced to being alone with the help of training, advises dog trainer Ulrike Seumel in an interview with the dpa.

You should also practice again with older dogs that were alone for a few hours before the Corona period.

My dog is neither alone nor is he allowed to go to the office - what can I do?

If all else fails and the dog is neither allowed to go to the office nor is it happy to be at home alone, there is still

outside care

.

There are three options to choose from:

  • Dog sitter, also called dog walker,

  • Dog daycare or

  • Supervision by other dog owners.

Anyone who opts for a dog sitter or a day care center should take a close look at how they treat their own dog.

Vier Pfoten recommends

visiting

the

facility in advance or taking a test walk with the walker

.

Since both care options are often fully booked, it is advisable for dog owners to start searching early.

By the way, some dog breeds are particularly suitable for working people due to their special character.
