The US singer Britney Spears has been under guardianship for 13 years, and the 39-year-old has been fighting for self-determination for a long time.
She could now possibly have come a step closer to this goal: US media reports that her father has petitioned the court to end Britney Spears' guardianship.
Jamie Spears has been his daughter's guardian since 2008 after she collapsed mentally due to personal and professional problems.
Initially, he managed Britney Spears' wealth and private affairs.
In 2019 he stepped down, but remained responsible for finances.
In mid-August, he surprisingly announced that he would resign as guardian.
In the new application, he apparently goes one step further: As reported by CNN and NBC News, among others, he is now calling for the guardianship to be ended completely.
Britney Spears "has a right to have this court seriously examine whether this guardianship is no longer necessary," says the motion.
Their living conditions have changed to such an extent "that there may no longer be any reasons to maintain guardianship."
Jamie Spears also relies on his daughter's recent statements in court: Britney Spears had demanded an end to the guardianship over her person and her finances.
“I just want my life back.
That was 13 years, and it's enough, "said the singer in a 23-minute statement at the end of June, which was broadcast on video.
She also accused her father of not allowing her to marry her boyfriend or have more children.
"Mr. Spears has repeatedly insisted that he only wants the best for his daughter," says CNN in Jamie Spears' petition, which has now been filed with the court.
"If Mrs. Spears wants to end her guardianship and believes she can organize her own life, then Mr. Spears believes she should get the chance."
