Hobby gardeners should now think about the last harvest of the season and about winter preparations.

In September garden fans will have plenty of work to do again.

Because the harvest is partly still in its entirety, the fruit and vegetables need to be properly stored, consumed or preserved.

But garden maintenance is far from over, because autumn is approaching and with it the care of the garden plants.

Garden in September: What now needs to be done in terms of care and winter preparation

At best, September combines the warming rays of the sun with the already discolored leaves of the trees and ensures beautiful and relaxed days in the garden.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work entirely without work, because remaining fruits have to be harvested.

In addition to potatoes and pumpkins, for example, numerous late apple varieties are slowly ripe.

You can find the full harvest calendar for September here *.

In culinary terms, September is to a certain extent the transition from summer to autumn.

Fresh fruit is still ready to be harvested, but parsnips, a more typical winter vegetable, are sometimes fresh on the plate.

But that's not all.

The beginning of autumn is on September 22nd, so it's clear that gardening is now also changing compared to summer.

The following work in the garden is due in September:

  • Harvest

: September is still harvest time.

Any fruit and vegetables that are ripe should be stored right away.

A lot can be made long-lasting or freshly processed into great dishes.

If you have too much harvest, neighbors or acquaintances are sure to be happy about fresh fruit and vegetables.

  • Green manure

: If the beds are then empty, green manure can still be sown.

It loosens the soil and prepares it for the new season in the coming year.

  • Planting new plants

: In addition to spring, autumn is an ideal time for planting.

Peonies, for example, are now allowed in the ground.

  • Planting flower bulbs

    :

    Garden fans

should slowly start thinking about the coming year.

Winterlings, bluestars, grape hyacinths, snowdrops, ornamental onions, irises and a few others are allowed to grow in the ground as early as September so that they will bloom profusely next year.

  • Perennial

care: Even existing plants need care in autumn, for example perennials.

Well, after flowering, the ideal time has come to split some perennials.

The pruning can be done a little later or not done at all.

Those who let perennials stand, offer insects shelter with their stems for the winter.

  • Lawn care

: With the summer, the lawn season slowly comes to an end, the green is now less stressed. Before winter, the lawn can be re-sown in bare places, this is also advised by the North German Broadcasting Corporation (NDR). Mowing continues until around the end of October, but before that the lawn should never be fertilized with fertilizer rich in phosphorus and nitrogen. Instead, the NDR advises fertilizers with a high potassium content.

  • Remove leaves

(or not): The first leaves will slowly fall by the end of September at the latest.

It should always be removed on the lawn so as not to damage the grass through rot.

In other places, however, the autumn leaves can be a good frost protection and many a hedgehog is happy about piles of leaves.

Some insects also hibernate in it.

Remember, however, that poplar, chestnut, walnut, oak and plane tree leaves only rot slowly.

  • Gaining seeds

: if not now, then when?

In September there is still time to harvest seeds for vegetables, but also for various other garden plants.

Dry the seeds and use them the following year.

Depending on the seeds, stratification in winter can be useful, in which case you can ideally move the seeds forward on the windowsill in spring.

  • Remove windfalls

: If you only see a few fruits on the ground, you can throw them on the compost or collect them.

Windfalls can also be buried as a natural fertilizer, which is particularly useful for large quantities.

However, diseased fruits or those with pests should always be removed.

A small remainder can then of course remain for animals.

Too much windfall, on the other hand, could attract wasps.

In theory, windfalls that are collected immediately can even be used in the kitchen.

  • Sowing

: In addition to all the winter preparations, it is not too late for a new sowing.

Winter vegetables can still be sown or planted in September, and some plants can even be harvested well all year round.

  • Sowing Cold Sprouts

: Remember that some plants require a cold spell to germinate.

So-called cold germs are also allowed into the bed from September.

  • Pest

    prevention

: Bring at best at the end of September Leimringe against winter moth on.

Of course, only if other animals such as bats or birds are not endangered and stick.

The rings should be as close as possible so that the females cannot crawl under them.

Poles or pegs on the tree must also be equipped with rings.

In December, the glue rings come off again in order to dispose of any eggs that may have been laid.

  • Cleaning nest boxes

: Alternatively, spring before the first brood is also suitable for this.

In autumn, however, most of the young animals have flown out and the nest has not yet been re-occupied.

Now nest boxes can be freed of parasites and cleaned with a hand brush, NABU urgently advises against chemical cleaning agents.

    Knock briefly beforehand, no joke.

This gives any residents time to flee.

If you forget this thing while growing vegetables, there is a risk of diseases and pests.

Garden fans who like it properly should also leave dead wood and leaves in at least one corner as winter quarters for wild animals from autumn.

At the latest with a blanket of snow over it, it no longer bothered anyone and our animal garden visitors benefit from it.

By the way, the flowering time is by no means over in September, in addition to colorful trees there are especially blooming autumn flowers, which now provide color in the garden.
