The new Volkstheater in Munich's Schlachthofviertel is ready.

Artistic director Christian Stückl opens the house on October 15th with "Edward II" by Christopher Marlowe.

That's rare: Christian Stückl is speechless for a brief moment.

“I don't know where to start,” says the director of the Munich Volkstheater.

Who can blame him?

After all, it will be the first press conference in the new building at Tumblingerstraße 29. The first premiere will be celebrated here on October 15 in the Schlachthofviertel.

Host Stückl stages “Edward II” by Shakespeare contemporary Christopher Marlowe.

The Munich Volkstheater will have three stages in the future

It took three years to build in the Schlachthofviertel, and the project cost almost 131 million euros.

In the future, the building will have three stages with space for 600, 200 and 100 people.

The usable area is around 25,000 square meters, including catering: As at the old location on Brienner Straße, Florian Gleibs takes care of the restaurant, which is now called “Schmock”.

“Now Samma do”, stated Stückl on stage 2 on Thursday morning.

"Everything went smoothly, we stayed - despite Corona - within the estimated construction time, we kept to the specified budget, everyone, from the city council to the departments involved, from architects to building contractors and the employees of our company - First and foremost our technical director Carsten Lück - worked hand in hand, and now it is there: a real theater! "

Lord Mayor Reiter: "It's good that there is a new folk theater"

Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) speaks of a “good day for culture in Munich” and thanks the “large majority” in the city council, who agreed to the “known gentle push from Christian Stückl” and cleared the way for the new building: “ It is good for the citizens of Munich that there is a new popular theater.

Thank you to everyone who was involved - it's just a beautiful day today. "

So that the new house can be filled with life, the Volkstheater has increased the number of its permanent employees from 100 to 150, three actresses and four actors strengthen the ensemble to 22 people.

Together with the guests, they will stage 16 premieres in the 2021/22 season;

so far, a maximum of ten new productions have been released per season.

In addition to the opening premiere, Artistic Director Stückl is also staging the adaptation of Juli Zeh's bestselling novel “Über Menschen”.

The new in-house director Philipp Arnold takes care of Oscar Wilde's “Life is Serious (Bunbury)” and Martin Sperr's “Hunting Scenes from Lower Bavaria”.

As reported, the stage will also enter into collaborations: for example with the Munich Philharmonic, who are moving to the interim Gasteig and thus to the immediate vicinity;

with the State Opera and with the “Spielart” festival, for which the Indian theater maker Sankar Venkateswaran will finally be working again in Munich.

With regard to the Corona policy of the Free State, Christian Stückl says: “It doesn't matter what comes out of the individual projects - I just wish that we can play.

Because that is the meaning of what we do. ”That's the way it should be.
