A few days ago, an "Arabesque" festival of Arabic and Andalusian music was held in Acre.

When the Jewish and Arab musicians took the stage at the new Hall of Culture in the city, one could feel for a moment the sense of normalcy, sanity and coexistence that the city's residents had felt for so many years, until last May riots that managed to crack trust between Jews and Arabs.

But the five days of the festival, which included a tribute to Abd al-Wahhab and the Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony to Raymond Abacus, managed to express what has distinguished Acre over the years - a city that is a bridge between cultures, between peoples.

Daniel Arma, director of the city's tourism department, also feels that the city is slowly recovering from the wound that opened up in it three months ago.

"The public is returning to the city, the hotels are filling up and we are already much more optimistic," he says.

Senior city officials also admit that the riots in May caused a real upheaval and that many find it difficult to return to routine and trust.

But the reality is stronger than anything else, and a short stroll along the beach and afterwards in the alleys of the market proves that the cliché is indeed true.

Acre is not just a city.

It manages to provide a very unique experience that combines the old and the new, and manages to provide everyone with enjoyment of a variety of experiences - from attractions and entertainment, to fascinating history to glorious cuisine that does not end with the famous hummus Said.

Whether you come to the city on Sukkot to watch performances of the Acre Festival for another theater on Sukkot or at another time - we have compiled for you some recommendations for the northern city.

culture

Last week, a new cultural hall was inaugurated in Acre in a festive launch show by musician Idan Raichel.

NIS 50 million has been invested in the beautiful hall - which includes 600 seats - over the years, and it is expected to host the best artists in Israel for music performances, theater, children's performances and stand-up.

The hall is spread over 3,000 square meters, three floors, an art gallery where rotating exhibitions will be displayed and a cafe that will be open at all hours of the day.

The hall, designed by the Mansfeld-Kehat Architects Office, incorporated characteristics of green construction. It was built on parts of the original building - formerly known as the Municipal Auditorium - and as part of the design is a glass canopy. Speaking on the eve of the gala launch, Mayor Shimon Lankri said the opening of the Hall of Culture is a "big dream come true." He added that he sees it as "a beating heart and connects to the city's great vision, a city of cultures, a city that is a national and international center for action, creativity, quality of life." In his first week, Idan Raichel, the confused Yuval, Adir Miller, the play "Saleh Shabati" and the "Arabesque" festival performed at the Heichal. Later on, the name of the famous Hassidic singer Avraham Fried will appear.

Alongside the new hall, during the summer it was possible to catch performances by the best artists (Shiri Maimon, Ivri Lider, Shalom Hanoch, Berry Sakharof, Yishai Ribo, etc.) in one of the most spectacular complexes in Israel - "The Citadel", located in the heart of Old Acre next to the historic knights' halls.

The shows at the venue are expected to continue and you should check who is performing on the days when you come to visit the city.

Extreme Park

Not many know, but Acre is home to one of the largest and most professional extreme extreme parks in Israel.

It features the largest 32-foot-tall climbing wall in the Middle East, a 90-foot-long omega, sky-track trails and hundreds of feet of climbing walls designed specifically for the park.

The highlight of the park is of course the bungee jump from a height of 32 meters, which are no less and no more than 10 floors.

This is not a normal bungee jump, but a jump in which from the moment of the jump, a resistance is created with the help of which it is possible to reach the ground with a soft landing.

The facility is designed for ages 10 and up, and is without a doubt one of the most fun parks your kids will be in.

Give yourself a few hours of extreme and excitement - you too will enjoy, and so will the children.

The park is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, including Fridays.

Admission is NIS 130.

A celebration of thrills.

Market and history

Everyone who comes to visit Acre, of course, knows the market in the Old City. It's not a big market, but it's always fun to walk around, go to the stalls, order, smell the food, mix with the intoxicating spices - and talk to the hospitable sellers. But next to the market, of course, lies a fascinating history that is worth spending half a day just wandering in its wake. Beneath the beautiful citadel structure built by the Ottoman ruler Ahmad al-Jazar are the remains of a citadel from the Crusader period. The halls that were uncovered underground are called the Knights' Halls and there you can be exposed to the lives of the Crusader knights who lived here hundreds of years ago.

You can see the prison hall where prisoners were chained to the walls, next to it you can see a spectacular and huge dining room where the soldiers used to eat meals while sitting at long tables. Next to the dining room you can also visit the bathroom used by the knights and their men. At that time, by the way, there was no toilet paper and the Crusaders had to find other substitutes to clean up, headed by rabbit ears (!). Next to these are many other intriguing halls, each with a fascinating story attached that the children will also enjoy hearing.

Not far away is one of the most fun attractions in Old Acre - the Templar Tunnel. This is a secret underground tunnel that connected the Templar Palace to the port of Acre. It is about 150 meters long and it actually passes under the town houses. A few minutes away you can also reach the 18th century and the Ottoman period - and see a Turkish bath (bathhouse) built by the then governor of Acre, Jazar Pasha. The place was the social center of the city, where transactions were made, stories were told, rumors were heard and gossip began. If you will, it was a kind of Bridgerton of the Ottoman period.

In Old Acre you can be exposed to a lot of other history, such as the ancient khans who used to serve the merchants who came to the city or the Ramchal Visitor Center where you can hear about the lesser known story of the Jewish community in Acre during the Crusader rule. At least in some of these places, for us they were the highlight of a visit to the city.

lodging

Acre is certainly full of accommodations and hotels, but we would rather talk about the hotel we were in: Acre.

This is a boutique hotel that gave us a completely different experience from any hotel we have been to in the past.

First, the hotel rooms are scattered at several points in Old Acre, a few meters or tens of meters from the hotel entrance.

In order to get to the room you actually have to walk through the magical alleys of the old city, feel the atmosphere, climb to the room on the stairs (and therefore the hotel is not accessible to the disabled), say "good morning" to the Akko resident who lives right next to the room - and look at the sea.

Every guest in the hotel basically becomes an integral part of the neighborhood, the beating heart of the old city.

The hotel defines the experience as follows: Old Acre is the hotel and "Acre" is the rooms.

Each room is different from another, but they have all been renovated and redesigned.

The main building of the hotel also has access to the roof terrace, where breakfast is served daily.

This is a meal that is not necessarily served to hotel guests, and is certainly completely different from any breakfast we have tasted in the past.

She is rich, unique and creative.

The landscape - the waves - is one of the most beautiful we have seen in Israel.

How fun to open the morning like that.

Price per couple per night, including breakfast: NIS 1,500-970.

During the holidays, a 10% discount is offered to customers from the site.

Food

The city of Acre abounds in wonderful culinary options - from gourmet restaurants, to excellent hummus (yes, hummus Said, but really not just him) to places with homemade food. All this is clear and well known, but we actually came to turn the spotlight on two restaurants we ate at the current visit and really enjoyed: the first is "Ruths" a kosher chef restaurant founded by chef Uri Arnold with two Acre residents, Muslim and Christian. The restaurant is located in the heart of the beautiful garden next to the Knights' Halls in the Acre Citadel within a space with a vaulted ceiling. The restaurant serves excellent dishes that combine local Arab cuisine with modern dishes.

The second restaurant is "Doniana", which like "Roths" is also in a spectacular location: on an observation point on top of the ancient southern wall of Acre with the sea and Haifa Bay facing it and on the other side - the remains of the Crusader port wall. Its menu is much more mainstream - meat dishes, chickpeas, a variety of salads, fish, etc.- and everything we tried was amazingly delicious.
