"The new works make it possible to reconstruct Miró's legacy to his family, since he gave one work from each series to his wife, while Calder's five will fill a gap," said Puig.
Until now, the Barcelona center had 217 paintings, 178 sculptures, nine textiles (including the one-ton tapestry that it created in 1979 for its new foundation), four ceramics, two objects, in addition to some 8,000 drawings and the complete library of the artist.
Puig has highlighted that the family's generosity continues in the line of Miró as “great patron of Barcelona” when he donated his art collection to the city to create the foundation that opened its doors in 1975. "They are talking to solve it," explained Puig, without wanting to go deeper, since an agreement has not yet been reached between the three administrations to see how the new contributions are formalized in a stable and annual way necessary for the correct functioning of the center , with visitors or not. Last year the City Council contributed 1.7 million euros and the Generalitat 1.6 million. And the Ministry after reducing its contributions to 90,000 euros in the next budgets allocates a game of 500,000 euros. The key, as explained by the Barcelona City Council,is that the Government has just materialized the bicapitality agreements with which Pedro Sanchez agreed with Ada Colau in February 2020, which will represent a contribution of 20 million euros each year to finance cultural facilities that transcend the Barcelona area due to their importance , such as the Liceo, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the Macba or the Joan Miró Foundation.
However, the Foundation describes the situation that has been lived this summer as a "turning point", since visitors return little by little: this August 11,785 people have visited their collections and the museum designed by Josep Lluís Sert, compared to 2,496 in August last year; a figure far from the 33,275 that did so in the same month of 2019.
