The magnitude 7.1 earthquake that rocked central and southern Mexico overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday left one dead, as well as damage to hospitals, homes, shops and hotels in the port of Acapulco , authorities said on Wednesday. The earthquake occurred at 1:47 a.m. GMT on Wednesday and its epicenter was 11 km southeast of Acapulco, Guerrero, in southern Mexico. A person was killed by a fall from a pole in the municipality of Coyuca de Benitez in Guerrero, authorities said. In other parts of the country where the earthquake was felt, only minor damage was reported.
In Mexico City, a group of people got stranded in a cable car cabin above the city after a power cut.
“Calm down, calm down,” a man can be heard responding to a panicked woman.
The author of the video said the passengers were finally able to be evacuated after an hour.
In central Mexico City, residents still have the tragic memory of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake recorded on September 19, 2017, which rocked the center of the country and left 369 people dead, most of them in the capital.
However, the city returned to normal on Wednesday, with the exception of some areas which suffered power cuts.

The mayor of Acapulco, Adela Román, said that after the earthquake, anguish prevailed among the population, but that his government was visiting several areas which reported damage. “Yesterday we suffered from fear and panic, the people were very anxious, but we managed to visit and tour many places in Acapulco. We went around the places where it was said that there were problems with gas leaks, ”said the mayor in an interview with the Milenio television channel. She also said several hospitals had suffered structural damage, but more specific reports were expected.
