Blockbuster director Christopher Nolan ("Tenet", "Dunkirk") is a notorious secret agent when it comes to his new film projects.

Plot details are always hidden until shortly before the start.

So there is no news from Nolan himself about his new project, but the always well-informed Hollywood Reporter wants to know that it will be about the American physicist Robert Oppenheimer, the scientific director of the Manhattan project from which the atomic bomb emerged .

Several studios should therefore compete for the material: Sony, Universal, Warner and Paramount.

In the past, Nolan had made most of his often expensive films with Warner.

Streaming services are likely to be largely out of the running because Christopher Nolan is a vocal proponent of cinema.

Most recently, the Briton had been angry about Warner's strategy of showing films in the cinema and on his streaming platform HBO Max at the same time.

It is possible that this is why he is not offering his new work directly to Warner.

Warner released Nolan's last film, Tenet, exclusively in cinemas last year, with the hope that it would end the pandemic-induced drought in cinemas with strong box-office income.

This hope was not fulfilled at the time, "Tenet" only grossed 58 million dollars on its opening weekend in the USA.

Nevertheless, Nolan is one of the few directors in Hollywood who get a carte blanche for their planned films.

With his biggest box office hits to date, "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises" alone, he grossed just over a billion dollars worldwide in 2012.

The fact that he is now letting the studios vie for the rights to his new project should also be understood as a show of power.
