A carcinogenic disinfectant could be in it.

Bad Wimpfen - The discounter Lidl has to recall two of its pasta products.

The reason: there may be residues of a pesticide in the food.

The company announced this on Wednesday in Bad Wimpfen.

The affected products were sold almost all over Germany.

Specifically, the toxic agent is ethylene oxide.

Plant protection is not permitted in the European Union.

According to the discounter, it cannot be ruled out that residues of the poison may be found in food that has already been sold.

Lidl did not provide any information about how the toxin could end up in the pasta products.

In many countries outside the EU, the colorless, sterilizing gas is used to combat bacteria or fungi.

As reported by the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, ethylene oxide is classified as harmful to health.

The Federal Office says: "Ethylene oxide is mutagenic and carcinogenic."

Lidl: Almost all of Germany is affected - there is only one exception

According to Lidl, the two products were sold in almost all federal states in Germany - Saarland is the only exception. Lidl promises uncomplicated returns: the noodles can be returned to all branches of the discounter.

Even if customers cannot present a receipt for the products, the purchase price will be reimbursed, according to Lidl.

Another food manufacturer recently announced a recall: fruit could no longer be edible - a mold is being warned against cancer.
