Where will the next one fall?
Yesterday, in Washington, in New York in other big cities, the Americans cast a distressed glance towards a very blue sky, as soon as the noise of an airplane tore the silence.
The glance was the same as that of the Londoners, helpless under the blitz.
Or that of the Pacific sailors paralyzed by Pearl Harbor.
On their soil, Americans have never suffered the terror of air attacks.
Yesterday the United States experienced war.
The images were grotesque, difficult to digest, almost obscene.
The symbols of American power have been threatened, attacked, sometimes pulverized by suicide planes, in serial explosions, torrents of acrid smoke, cascades of dust.
Postcard or cinema sets suddenly turned into a tomb.
