Damascus-SANA

Once high school students are relieved of the anxiety of waiting for exam results, the successful ones experience another tension, which is choosing a university branch. While some of them turn towards their desires and tendencies without confusion, others remain under the burden of making a decision that will determine the shape of their future and their lives. Experts advise in this case to know the requirements of the labor market and a question Experienced owners, while some of them see the need to change the work culture prevailing among young people.

Head of the Psychological Counseling Department at the Faculty of Education at Damascus University, Dr. Khaled Al-Ammar, explained to SANA that the student should take his abilities into consideration when choosing a university major, because in the event of an imbalance between abilities and choice, the student may stumble academically and fail like a student interested in civil engineering, but he is weak in mathematics. It definitely succeeds.

Dr. Al-Ammar advised the student to consult experts from university professors or those studying in the university branch that he wants to enter and benefit from their experiences, warning of the attempts of parents to force their son to a university major and to get carried away by names, so they push him to be a doctor or engineer without taking into account his inclinations and abilities.

Al-Ammar pointed to the need to be careful in making the final decision, and for the student to take his full time to study and search for available options to avoid falling into regret in the future, considering that choosing a major is not the end of the road, but rather its beginning, as a person must constantly develop his skills to be distinguished in his field, as the labor market is looking for distinguished people. .

For her part, a member of the faculty at the Faculty of Economics, University of Damascus, Dr. Rasha Serop, considered that the choice of young people for a university major should take into account the requirements of the labor market, noting that Syria, in the reconstruction phase, needs human cadres in sectors, the most important of which are industry, agriculture, construction, contracting, economy, management and entrepreneurship.

Serop indicated that there will also be a demand for disciplines related to alternative energy, recycling, informatics, media and e-marketing.

Serop considered that the prevailing thought among graduates is still focused on the search for a paid job, any job and not free work. Therefore, it is necessary to move towards spreading the culture of “organized” self-employment and preparing the graduate for that in light of government measures that are directed towards supporting entrepreneurship and establishing small and micro enterprises.
