Wernsing Feinkost GmbH and the trading companies affected, including Edeka, are said to have reacted immediately and removed the relevant goods from sale.
Addrup food - Anyone who has recently bought a dessert like Rote Grütze in the supermarket should think twice about where he or she bought the product.
Because Wernsing Feinkost GmbH announced on Tuesday (September 8th) that own-brand groats products from Edeka or Marktkauf and Netto-Brandediscount are being recalled: "As part of a self-investigation, a breakdown product of the pesticide ethylene oxide was detected."
Product recall at Edeka & Co: The following products are affected
Are affected (probably nationwide)
the following four products in 1000 gram cups: From the brand “GUT & GÜNSTIG” (Edeka / Marktkauf) the items “Rote Grütze” (best before date until November 26th, 2021) and “Kirsch Grütze” (best before 21st November 2021) as well as by the brand "Best harvest" the articles "Rote Grütze" (best before 5.11.2021) and "Kirsch Grütze" (best before 19.11.2021).
It is assured that articles with other best-before dates should not be affected.
The gas is said to have been introduced via the thickening agent locust bean gum.
"The safety of the product is no longer fully guaranteed," says the food company.
Consumption of the products is not recommended.
Customers who have bought one of the above-mentioned products can return them for a refund of the purchase price - even without presenting the receipt.
Ethylene oxide: what you need to know about the gas
Ethylene oxide, which is responsible for the recall of goods, is a gas with a sweet odor.
It is extremely flammable and carcinogenic.
Ethylene oxide is used as a thickener or stabilizer in many food products.
Due to its sterilizing effect, it is also used as a disinfectant.
In the EU, the gas for the production of food and feed is banned.
In many third countries, however, ethylene oxide is still used to combat fungi and bacteria.
