Amazing news for lovers, and especially for lovers, the avocado.

In addition to being the most delicious and nutritious vegetable in existence, a new study reports that eating avocados a day can help women reduce belly fat - a problem that many women, especially those after childbirth, face.

The study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, found that researchers at the University of Illinois who followed a group of women for three months, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Florida and the University of Eastern Illinois, found that those who consistently ate one avocado daily saw lower abdominal fat.

"The goal was not weight loss; we wanted to understand what eating avocados does to how people store the fat in their bodies. The location of the fat in the body plays an important role in health," said study editor Professor Neiman Khan, an expert in kinesiology and community health in Illinois.

He added that "in the abdomen there are two types of fat: fat that accumulates just under the skin, called subcutaneous fat, and fat that accumulates deeper in the abdomen, known as visceral fat, which surrounds the internal organs. People with a higher rate of deeper visceral fat tend to be at higher risk. "Then we were interested in determining whether the ratio of subcutaneous fat to visceral fat changed with the consumption of avocados."

Abdominal fat has been linked to other harmful health conditions such as insulin resistance, increased inflammation and metabolic diseases, even in people with a normal BMI.

One a day.

105 overweight and obese adults participated in a randomized controlled trial that provided one meal a day for 12 weeks.

Study participants, men and women alike, were separated into two groups.

One group received meals that incorporated fresh avocados, while the other group received a meal that contained nearly identical ingredients and similar calories but did not contain avocados.

At the beginning and end of the study period, the research team measured the subjects' abdominal fat and glucose tolerance, which is considered to indicate overall metabolic function as well as diabetes risk.

The results showed that women who ate avocados regularly enjoyed a significant decrease in their abdominal fat, which is usually the fat that is most difficult to get rid of.

In addition, the same women also experienced a decrease in the ratio of combat fat to subcutaneous fat, suggesting a redistribution of fat in their body.

It is important to note, however, that men who followed the same diet and also consumed avocados a day, did not experience any changes in fat distribution.

"While daily consumption of avocados did not change glucose tolerance, what we learned is that a diet plan that includes avocados every day affected the way people store body fat, in a way that is beneficial to their health, but the benefits were mostly in women."

Professor Khan explained, "It is important to prove that dietary interventions can regulate fat distribution. Learning that these benefits only exist in women tells us little about the potential of sex to play a role in dietary intervention responses."

Later, the authors of the study will want to conduct further research on this topic.

Next time they aim to provide research subjects with all of their daily meals, and gain further insight into the metabolic impact of avocado consumption on men and women alike.
