The Taliban formally hoisted its banner yesterday on the presidential palace in Kabul, with a ceremony that marks the "official start of the government", reports a spokesman quoted by the Guardian.

The flag, white with a verse from the Koran, already placed on the palace on the day of the conquest of the capital, was hoisted by the prime minister, Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, spokesman Ahmadullah Muttaqi said.

Separate lessons and hijabs for women in Afghan universities: the Taliban Minister of Education, Abdul Baqi Haqqani, today confirms the measures announced in recent days in a press conference relaunched by the international media. "We will not allow boys and girls to study together," he said, "we will not allow joint education."
