What makes the Delta strain so contagious and can it be stopped?

The fourth wave of the corona causes a massive infection that has not been seen here before.

Thanks to the vaccines, the number of dead and seriously ill is relatively low, but a bit of infection is very worrying.

A new study has tried to find out what is in the delta strain that makes it so durable and contagious?

After the holidays not here yet, but one thing can already be said for sure - the fourth wave, whether it starts to fade or not, is the hardest seen here since the corona started.

And responsible for this is the Delta version that has become the most dominant strain of SARS-CoV-2 in the world in less than a year.

After being first identified in India in October 2020, the Delta variant caused a catastrophic second wave of corona cases in India, starting around March 2021. The variant then reached other countries around the world, competing in all other versions until it quickly established itself as the most common strain leading to infections, hospitalizations and deaths. More.

As mentioned, since last June - also in Israel.

But what made this specific version so effective in infecting humans, even those already vaccinated with three vaccines? In a new study, led by the University of Cambridge and published this week in the journal Nature, researchers conducted a number of laboratory experiments to identify why the Delta version became responsible for so many cases of infection and death. They found that this was largely due to the ability of this variant to evade antibodies and its skills to invade the host cells.

First, the Delta version appears to be more efficient at penetrating cells compared to other versions because it is armed with more cracked spikes on its surface. In order for the corona virus to infect one of our cells, the spike protein (the thorn) binds to another receptor that is found on the surface of the cells in our body. Both proteins cleave or split, allowing a genetic material from the virus to enter the host cell. More insulated spikes means better access. Once in the cell, the delta strain also appears to be able to replicate more efficiently, the researchers said.

Combined with this skill, the Delta version is also better at preventing immune responses, whether it is as a result of a vaccine or a previous infection.

To find out how, the team was able to extract a serum from blood samples collected from a variety of people, some vaccinated with Asterzenka or Pfizer vaccines and some infected with corona.

The samples included a variety of variants, including the original strain first identified in Wuhan City, China.

Because these people were infected with COVID-19 or received the vaccine, their blood serum contained several antibodies that were supposed to neutralize the virus.

The researchers found that the delta strain was 5.7 times less sensitive to sera (single of the serum) than previously infected people, and eight times less sensitive to sera from vaccinated people, compared to the alpha version.

In other words, it took more antibodies from a person who was immunized than someone who already had COVID-19 to block the virus.

In general, more antibodies — whether from a vaccine or a natural infection — were required to block the delta version compared to other strains.

The Delta variant is faster, not more violent

"It is important to say that for most of the findings in the study we are quite aware," explains Dr. Oren Kuibler of the Department of Microbiology and Clinical Immunology at Tel Aviv University.

That's not the story here.

To me the obvious story is the reproducibility of this strain, which is much faster, "says Kubiler.

He adds that" we do not know exactly how it replicates.

But it creates new viruses faster than previous viruses and this is what allows it to mostly spread more than the others to my taste.

And this is the only difference - it is faster than the other varieties, so it removes the others from its path.

It does not make him more violent or more capable of evading the vaccine. "

"There are important for several things when looking at infection among those that have taken place already. It depends on which variant they were infected, how long it took and whether they were vaccinated after that occurred - at the moment it seems that whoever becomes immune after ovary is in the best shape," explains Dr. Kobilr.

Despite all That being said, it's important not to make a mistake, it's still worth getting vaccinated, and although infection also occurs in vaccinated people, vaccines significantly reduce the risk of getting serious and being hospitalized with coronary heart disease. How will it end, "concludes Dr. Koviler.
