Italia Solare, campaign against photovoltaic hoaxes

Italia Solare, the association of photovoltaic companies, has launched a press campaign to combat fake news that revolve around solar energy.

Among the 5 most common myths, the first is "Photovoltaic systems steal land from agriculture". To achieve the greenhouse gas emission reduction targets by 2030, explains Italia Solare, 43 Gigawatts (GW) of new photovoltaic installations are required. The new power requires about 56 thousand hectares of surface. Of this, 30% could go to roofs. The necessary agricultural area is only about 39 thousand hectares. The agricultural area used in the country is 12.4 million hectares, the unused area is 4.2 million hectares. The land needed for solar panels is one third of the agricultural area that is abandoned every year, that is 120,000 hectares. Furthermore, between the rows and under the panels it is possible to maintain agricultural activity, the so-called "agro-photovoltaic".

The second fake new is "Behind the fires there is the photovoltaic business". Italia Solare explains that the lands devastated by fires are excluded from any possible use for the next 15 years, according to the national law 353 of 2000.

Third false myth is "Photovoltaics represent a danger to the landscape and compromise biodiversity": on the areas of landscape or naturalistic value, it is not possible to install panels on the ground, because they are already protected by landscape constraints.

Another fake news is "Photovoltaics is an unreliable source because it is not programmable and unpredictable". The very high precision now achieved by weather forecasts, together with the historical data available on the production of photovoltaic systems, allows us to predict solar production, which can also be programmed thanks to the increasingly economical storage systems.

"Photovoltaic panels do not reduce CO2 emissions because coal energy is consumed to produce them" is the fifth and last of the hoaxes that run. The energy required to produce a photovoltaic module is compensated by the same module in less than a year of operation.
