The Federal Office for Consumer Protection has been warning against the consumption of certain instant noodles since Friday.

A control showed the toxic substance ethylene oxide.

Braunschweig - Large amounts of locust bean gum (E 410) are contaminated with ethylene oxide in the European Union.

The poisonous gas is used in third countries to disinfect food, but is banned in Germany.

A control now also found residues of ethylene oxide in instant noodles with the “chicken” taste from the manufacturer Reeva.

The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety has been warning against the consumption of the product since Friday.

Kaufland article affected by recall

The affected product is Reeva instant noodles with the flavor "Chicken" in a 60 gram package with the best before date 06/29/2022 or 06/30/2022.

According to the manufacturer, all other batches, flavors and best before dates are not contaminated.

The article was on the shelves at Kaufland, among others.

Anyone who has the product affected by the recall at home should not consume it under any circumstances.

Ethylene oxide is considered to be mutagenic and carcinogenic. Long-term consumption of the substance poses an acute health risk.

Consumers can return the product to a point of sale of their choice without presenting a receipt.

You will then be refunded the purchase price.

Number of recalls is increasing: Ethylene oxide pollution in many products

Consumer advocates have been warning against ethylene oxide pollution in numerous products for months. Other countries in the EU reacted quickly and took products off the market, Germany took more time: For example, certain types of ice cream from Mars were recalled in some countries as early as July 2021, in Germany it lasted almost until mid-August. Large amounts of locust bean gum in the EU are contaminated with ethylene oxide, they were imported from India and Turkey, among others. The locust bean gum marked as E410 is used as a thickener and stabilizer in ice creams, jams, baked goods and meat products.

More and more manufacturers have to recall their products because of exposure to ethylene oxide.

Including items from Lidl, Edeka and Netto.

So it is no coincidence that the number of food warnings in Germany increased overall this year.
