In Chubut what nobody believed was achieved.

Making wine in extreme conditions.

These wine productions were among the southernmost in the world.

Due to the low temperatures and frosts that threaten to ruin production, no one had dared to try.

In

Trevelin

, located 26 km from Esquel, the first bottle was only obtained in 2016. It was - and continues to be - trial and error.

“The cold makes the growth of the plant extremely slow.

The grape ripens in taste terms.

The sun causes aromatic components to be created.

The average alcohol of the wines is 11% ”explains Sofía Elena, winemaker at Contra Corriente winery.

In the October 16 Valley, there are

three vineyards

that make up the Chubut wine route.

Everyone works supporting each other, sharing tools and techniques to be able to face adversity.

Next, the experience of walking through these vineyards, feeling the passion of the producers, seeing the barrels and savoring these very particular wines.

Nant and Fall

Here you breathe family.

Three generations

work every day

.

Sergio Rodriguez, belongs to the second and is the one who welcomes us among the 4 hectares planted with different vines.

Nant y Fall is the

first winery in the area

.

A pioneer.

“It is an activity that had no precedent in this place.

My grandparents had vineyards all their lives in northern Italy.

The war caused a breakdown in activity, but the passion was inherited ”, explains Sergio.

In 2009, when they acquired the farm, it was full of musqueta.

While they were clearing the land, they began with technical pre-feasibility studies to see if the desire could be carried out.

"Everything concluded that viticulture was possible accompanied by

technology that allows us to protect plants from frost

."

In 2010 they became the first vineyard in the place.

“In 2016 it was the first time that grapes were harvested in the October 16 Valley to make wine.

At the end of that same year Trevelin had

his first bottle

”.

Its wines, products of 4 varietals - pinot noir, riesling, gewürztraminer and chardonnay - are present in highly recognized places such as the Llao Llao hotel, the Duhau Palace at the Park Hyatt and even Mauro Colagreco's restaurant in France.

From the Nant and Fall vineyards you can see the mountains of Los Alerces National Park.

After touring the vineyard, you can have lunch while tasting a bottle of the house.

For the visit to the winery, Emanuel, Sergio's son and an expert in winemaking, appears.

Right now, they are in full swing.

The previous winery was small and they are moving all the machinery to a new building, where there are already some tanks, barrels and bottles.

The place receives

14 thousand tourists annually

.

It offers accommodation in tent, motorhome and rooms.

Its park with grills surrounded by a stream and artificial lagoon also invites you to spend the day.

Against the Current

The name of this venture comes from the feeling that the owners had when they wanted to invest in the country.

They are from the United States and they maintain that when you want to do something in Argentina, everything is against the tide.

The vineyard consists of four hectares in which the 4 varieties that compose it are arranged: chardonnay, pinot noir, riesling and gewürztraminer.

Located on the banks of the River Percy, it offers incredible views while touring the vines and spa.

Among the vineyards of Contra Corriente.

The first harvest was in 2017. All employees, no matter what their role is, during the harvest months spend hours cutting fruits.

Currently

80% of the production is exported

to the United States and the rest can be found in some stores in Buenos Aires, online and in the winery.

The bottles are between

3,000 and 6,000 pesos

.

At the tasting, perhaps the most awaited moment, they give us a taste of gewürztraminer, chardonnay and pinot noir.

The first has a high acidity, perfect to accompany Asian meals.

The second is a variety that goes through the tank, also with great acidity.

Finally, the specialist, Sofía Elena, considers pinot with complexity.

“You smell them and you feel one thing.

After 10 minutes you feel another.

Complexity is best achieved in cold places ”.

On the palate it is light, but the flavor remains in the mouth.

Contra Corriente Lodge also offers accommodation.

It has a value of 350 dollars with double occupancy and breakfast.

95% of its customers are from the United States and they usually book two years in advance.

Contra Corriente Lodge also offers accommodation.

Yagüe House

Patricia Ferrari welcomes us at the farm followed by Charly, a jack russel who did not stop entertaining tourists during the tour.

Marcelo Yagüe, her husband, is pruning the vines, looking for quality and not quantity.

The first plantation was made in 2014 and the harvest in April 2017. Casa Yagüe has 3 hectares planted with chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, cabernet franc and pinot noir.

The winery is small. “It was small,” says Patricia while explaining that there are expansion projects.

In addition to the barrels, tanks and machines, they have a laboratory to analyze the different stages of the wine and test different combinations of strains.

They produce

three thousand bottles a year

, which are around

5,000 pesos

each.

Most are in Buenos Aires, but there are also in Córdoba and Mendoza.

They have already sent part of their production to Uruguay and Europe.

"The acidity of the wines is special for sparkling wines," he explains, adding that they plan to launch the first by the end of the year.

The vineyard is characterized by having an

organic management

and being planted open, that is to say that the plants were not grafted onto another vine as they do in different countries of the world, but rather it is the same plant.

Teamwork and family feel in the place.

For each harvest they call friends, play music and turn work into a moment of enjoyment.
