The Squaw Valley ski resort on Lake Tahoe, California, is getting a new name.
The background to the name change is the word squaw, reports the Guardian.
The indigenous groups in the region perceive the name as a racist and misogynistic insult to denigrate indigenous women.
The ski area, which has been known as Squaw Valley since 1949, will be called Palisades Tahoe in the future, the operators said.
The old name is "derogatory and offensive".
That is why it was decided more than a year ago to look for a new name.
The indigenous groups have long been demanding a renaming of the ski area, which became known as the venue for the 1960 Winter Olympics.
They were included in the new choice of name.
The decision to rename, announced last August, came after massive anti-racism protests in the United States that were sparked by the murder of George Floyd.
Since then, cities, schools and other organizations have been rethinking controversial names.
