Customers who have bought it from dm, among others, should definitely not eat it.

Dortmund - Almonds are not only delicious, they are also a popular ingredient.

In ground form, they can even replace conventional flour and shine with fewer carbohydrates, many vitamins and a high protein content.

But two almond products are now being recalled and could be harmful to health.

Recall of ground almonds at dm: Strongest naturally occurring poison found

Customers who already have the items in question in their pantry should definitely refrain from using them.

Manufacturer EgeSun GmbH writes: "Consumption is therefore strongly discouraged, as aflatoxins pose a health risk for the consumer." Customers can return the products.

The price will be refunded.

So the recall is no coincidence.

According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), aflatoxins are poisons (mycotoxins) formed by the mold species Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus.

"They are among the strongest naturally occurring poisons and carcinogenic substances," says the BfR.

Almond recall at dm: Warning of kidney and liver damage

The dangerous aflatoxins particularly often attack oil-containing and starchy seeds, various types of nuts, pistachios, almonds, figs, coconut, fruit, grain, rice, corn and soy.

Even if the infected food is cooked, there is still a risk.

Because aflatoxins are heat-stable (more news on recalls * at RUHR24).

If aflatoxins are ingested, high concentrations of them can damage the kidneys and liver - as well as unborn babies.

In addition, they should be able to damage the genetic make-up.

However, the BfR emphasizes that acute damage to health such as liver cell necrosis or acute liver failure occurs extremely rarely in humans.

It is more dangerous for humans if aflatoxins have been ingested over a longer period of time. Then there is a risk of kidney damage, liver damage such as cirrhosis, and kidney and liver cancer. Most recently, drug store competitor Rossmann was also affected by a recall *. It was a fitness shake. *
