If you want to get rid of old objects quickly and easily, you can give them away on the sidewalk.

However, this is an administrative offense.

Berlin - Old clothes, discarded dishes or unpleasant CDs or films: Household items like this can often be found in boxes on the sidewalk that are "given away".

What many do not know: anyone who leaves these items to themselves is committing an administrative offense.

In case of doubt, those affected have to dig deep into their pockets.

You can also dispose of these things properly - without much additional effort.

As the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU) informs, this type of waste disposal is an administrative offense - and it could even threaten a fine.

"

Strictly speaking,

the intention to discard is

a wild garbage dump," a spokeswoman for the VKU told the German press agency.

However, this only applies to public land: If you store your rubbish - or the things you have to hand over - in your own garden or driveway, you are on the safe side.

Fines for boxes "to be given away" - it will also be more expensive for bystanders

If the stored things are not picked up quickly, it is illegal storage, the spokeswoman said. Then there is a risk of fines for disposing of the waste. How high these turn out to be, however, cannot be said in general terms: "The fine depends, for example, on what items are involved, how many there are and what effort is involved in disposing of them."

If, for example, bulky waste is deposited on the sidewalk, i.e. objects that are so large and bulky that they do not fit into the usual garbage cans, it can become more expensive for those affected.

So these should better be brought to the recycling yard.

Even bystanders can have to pay extra for boxes that are "to be given away".

The costs for disposal are paid via the waste fee - and thus added to each individual fee payer.

Alternatives to "boxes to be given away": How do you properly dispose of household items?

As an alternative to the "donation of consumer goods" on the sidewalk, the Association of Municipal Enterprises therefore recommends contacting social institutions or social shops.

Often these facilities also offer free pickups.

Another possibility is to offer the used items online, for example in neighborhood networks.

"And maybe a visit to a repair café is also worthwhile, where used objects are breathed new life into," says the association.

Garbage disposal often causes disputes between tenants and landlords.

However, tenants are not allowed to dispose of household items on their doorstep or in the hallway.
