The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) has announced that it will reconsider the inclusion of cannabis on the list of banned substances.

Next year there will be a scientific review of the substance which, however, will also remain banned in 2022.

The initiative comes in the wake of the case of the American sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson, excluded from the Tokyo Olympics.

"Following requests from a number of interested parties - reads a note from Wada - the executive committee approved the decision of the advisory group of experts on the list to start a scientific review of the state of cannabis in 2022". In the note, the world anti-doping agency reiterates that "cannabis is currently banned in competition and will continue to be banned in 2022 ".

Richardson was banned from the Olympics due to a 30-day suspension after testing positive for marijuana at the US Olympic trials in June. His case has sparked a debate on the presence of marijuana on the Wada list of prohibited products. Many celebrities, athletes and politicians have criticized a rule they consider outdated and unnecessary. The head of the International Athletics Federation, Sebastian Coe, had also called for a review of the status of cannabis. "It's not unreasonable today to have an overhaul," he said during the July Olympics.
