The international environmental association Greenpeace turns 50 on Wednesday 15 September.

On September 15, 1971, a group of activists sailed to the island of Amchitka, off the coast of Alaska, to stop a US nuclear test aboard a fishing boat.

The money to rent the boat, named "The Greenpeace" for the occasion, was raised with a rock concert attended by Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Phil Ochs and the Canadian band Chilliwack.

The group's mission is simple: to lead the boat to the test site and prevent the bomb from being detonated by their very presence.

This is how Greenpeace was born half a century ago.

The environmental organization now has offices in more than 55 countries and 3 million supporters around the world, as well as activists, cyberactivists, researchers, lobbyists and an ever-growing number of allies.

In Italy, where it was born in 1986 - 35 years ago - the association has over 95,000 supporters, about a million cyberactivists and more than a thousand volunteers.
