When buying furniture, many customers think of the Swedish furniture retailer Ikea.

However, another seller dominates the online market in Germany.

Berlin / Munich - whether clothing, books, household goods or furniture: For some years now, customers have been buying more and more online. The online market in Germany was able to generate immense profits, especially during the corona pandemic. Furniture giants like Ikea are also discovering the advantages of online shopping more and more for themselves: Customers can now have their furniture delivered to their homes. Surprisingly, however, when it comes to buying furniture on the Internet, Ikea is not number one: A German mail-order company depends on the Swedish furniture manufacturer.

According to

surveys by

ecomerceDB

, which were published on the online data platform Statista, Ikea generated 645.7 million euros in 2020 with the online sale of furniture.

Ikea's greatest competition: The Otto Group.

The German mail order company sold almost twice as much furniture and household goods in this country last year: In 2020 Otto earned around 1.5 billion euros in interior design.

Otto depends on Ikea and Amazon when it comes to selling furniture and Co. online

In third place behind Otto and Ikea is another well-known retailer who is otherwise more used to being number one: Amazon earned 555 million euros in the same product category. At the bottom of the list are dealers like XXXLutz or home24, who specialize in the sale of furniture. However, these providers are already recording significantly lower sales than the giants Otto, Ikea and Amazon.

Overall, Statista estimates sales of furniture on the Internet at around eight billion euros - and the trend is rising. Nevertheless, Germans still prefer to buy their furniture locally. As Statista reports, only around 21 percent of Germans bought their facility on the Internet last year. In an international comparison, however, the situation between Ikea and Otto looks different: While the Swede earned around 37 billion euros in 2020, the German side only made half of 15.6 billion euros.
