The devastating forest fire in southern Spain near the Costa del Sol is under control.

The scenery in the disaster area seems apocalyptic: There wasn't much left of abandoned vehicles like this truck or bulldozer.

Since last Wednesday, the flames have destroyed around 9700 hectares of forest.

That corresponds to an area of around 13,000 soccer fields.

Animals also fell victim to the flames.

Virginie Walgraeve, Veterinarian

“Today is the first day the fire is under control and that's why we are here now with food and medicine for animals and wildlife.

We want to see if we can find injured animals near the roads to help them. "

Around 1,000 firefighters as well as around 50 helicopters and fire-fighting planes were temporarily deployed to fight the flames.

After almost six days, the onset of rain helped to get the fire under control.

The authorities have since given the all-clear, but some sources of fire still have to be extinguished.

Most of the 2,700 residents of eight evacuated villages and housing developments were able to return to their homes.

Investigators believe the fires were started by arsonists.
