At the dog beach in Del Mar, California, water-loving four-legged friends and their owners came together for the 16th Surf-A-Thon.

The organizer of the annual surf competition for dogs is the animal welfare organization "Helen Woodward Animal Center".

A total of 40 dogs entered the competition, including a particularly tiny

"

Teacup Chihuahua" named Bing Bang, who is said to have started surfing at the age of four months.

Four years ago, his owner Naomi Masiello bought a children's pool for $ 20 in the supermarket, filled it with water, put a boogie board in the middle and put a bing bang on it.

Since then, the dog surf regularly, Masiello said the

In this year's competition, Bing Bang did a good job -

"

He only fell off the board three times in ten minutes," said Masiello.

More than 300 spectators came and cheered, among other things, Bamboo, a seven-year-old

"

Double Doodle" - a cross between a Goldendoodle and a Labradoodle. The animal not only stood on the board with its owner, but also caught frisbees at the same time, which another team member threw at them. Impressions from the event can be found in this video:

Evaluation criteria for a place on the podium are shape, length of the surf ride and enjoyment of the sport.

According to the organizers, it's not just about perfection, but also about creativity, about

"

sun and fun".

In the Freestyle division, the search was on for the best dog-human duo and the best pack surfers - that is, dogs who dare to go on board in groups.

There was also a costume competition for four-legged friends in weird outfits.

The overall win was ultimately won by a Scottish Terrier named Petey.

According to the

"

San Diego Union-Tribune," the event on Sunday raised about $ 14,000 in donations that are now to be used for medical treatment or animal placement.
